Announcements

In August 2010, REC “Baikal” is hosting the next Summer International School. The main topic of this School organized for students, postgraduates and young researchers from Irkutsk State University and Christian Albrecht University (Kiel, Germany) is “Ecology of Large Water Bodies and Their Watershed”. A number of preparatory events have already been taken place. In January, a video conference was held with the participation of representatives from REC “Baikal” and Christian Albrecht University. In February, Dr. Wilhelm Windhorst visited Irkutsk to discuss the plan of the Summer School with the leading Russian specialists taking part in this project.

Beginning from April, young researchers chosen at the first stage as a result of absentee competition will get acquainted with review articles on the topic of the School, as well as with the facts and hypotheses available at our site. The material was prepared by professors of Irkutsk State University who will head the School field courses: E. Zilov (“Functional Baikal Studies, Climatic Changes, and Anthropogenic Influence), V. Takhteev (“Biodiversity of Baikal Amphipods”), A. Matveev (“Fish Population of Lake Baikal, Its Ecology and Evolution”), O. Rusinek (“Parasitic Systems of Lake Baikal”), and I. Fefelov (“Watersheds of the Central Asia and Contact Processes between Their Biotas”). It is planned to organize video conferences Irkutsk-Kiel and to provide contacts via Internet-Forum at the REC site for maximal and effective use of the results of the field work of the School.

In August, participants of the School will meet at the Biological Station of Irkutsk State University in Bolshiye Koty on the shore of Lake Baikal, where during 10 days they will work in groups under the guidance of Irkutsk and German professors. At the final stage of the School, the working groups will present their preliminary reports at the Conference in Listvyanka. Then the participants will depart but continue joint studies on their topics via Internet. As a result of this cooperation, the participants should write scientific papers.
