Title: Limnoecology of Lake Baikal: Microorganisms - Number and Biomass

Annotation: The 4th lecture of Limnoecology of Lake Baikal course. Methods of microorganisms study are described. Light microscopy, electron microscopy are briefly discussed. Special attention is paid to epifluorescent microscopy and its role in modern microbiology. The processes of sample preparation, microscopy itself, bacteria discrimination are described in details. Such items as biovolume, biomass, mean cell size and surface, C- and N-content are introduced and discussed. Description of data processing, problems of methodological and statistical nature, error propogation is given.
