Peshkova Scientific Research Institute of Biology at Irkutsk State University, Irkutsk, Russia SCIENTIFIC FUNDAMENTALS OF LAKE BAIKAL ENDEMIC SPECIES ECOLOGICAL MONITORING The concepts of species and endemic species from the taxonomy and ecology points of view are discussed. The problem of permanent change of species number due to taxonomic investigations makes monitoring of endemic species practically impossible. Principal, rather completely inves-tigated species, playing the major role in the ecosystem functioning, must be the objects of moni-toring. Such species as main endemic phytoplankton algae and Epischura baicalensis can serve as objects of ecological monitoring.
