Research-Educational Center “Baikal“
LibraryNews15.03.2010 At the REC “Baikal” Workshop held on 18 February 2010, REC representatives and Dr. Wilhelm Windhorst form Christian Albrecht University (Kiel, Germany) discussed a concept and plan of the Summer International School that would be held on Lake Baikal in August this year. Russian and German undergraduates, postgraduates and teachers traditionally take part in such events organized alternatively by REC “Baikal” and Christian Albrecht University on the coasts of Lake Baikal and the North Sea within the framework of bilateral agreement between Irkutsk State University and German University.
It is planned to apply a well-tested and proven innovation-education scheme including virtual and direct components. The first stage, including acquaintance, formation of groups, basic theoretical preparation, is provided via Internet-Forum at our site to more effectively use the time of direct communication. At the second stage, students will solve scientific problems in situ on the coast of Lake Baikal during two weeks. It will be possible to get data for further research during field studies and expeditions. The final phase of this cooperation is the conference at which participants will share their temporary results: which material has been collected, which results of the sample analyses have been obtained, which hypotheses will be worked on, etc. The third stage is continuation of cooperation of groups in the online regime. Reports on the work done will be published at lake.baikal.ru and the most interesting in Journal “News of Irkutsk State University”.
It is important that besides scientific aim, the conveners of international schools pursue a very important and useful goal for beginners: to develop general competence including improvement of language skills, ability to work in a team, competitiveness, proficiency in handling technical means, etc. Such schools also raise motivation for young researchers and prospects of their participation in other schools held on Lake Baikal and in Germany, as well as their long-term training at universities of the two countries.
