Research-Educational Center “Baikal“
Research and educational unitsStructural and evolutionary study of ecosystems of water bodies in the Baikal regionBaikal ecosystem is unique. Biotic community structure is significantly simpler than in other
deep-water lakes. Six species of diatomic algae and one species of dinofitic one makes 95% of
primary organic substances, one species of a 1
st order consumers – epishura (эпишура), producing 95% of annual production, consumes
primary organic substance and stands in the beginning of trophic chain of the whole ecosystem.
One more distinctive feature of Baikal among freshwater lakes is that it produces about 60% of
primary organic substance during under the ice period.
Perception of different trophic Baikal ecosystem link function mechanisms will be foundation
for law and ecological basis to save Baikal ecosystems and use its separate components for economic
and recreation purposes.
Research aim: Baikal ecosystem structure study, separate component role definition
to provide self-reproduction of its biotic communities.
Research missions: to study different trophic level species population functioning changeability, to define factors that cause this changeability, define species that take the crucial role in substance circulation and energy flow in the ecosystem. To define integral index change tendency that characterize autotrophic link functioning peculiarities – plankton-like algae, and species population state index, that play dominant role in substance and energy circulation. |
