Study of geological and tectonic processes for decreasing risks and nature disaster aftermaths

Pribaikal area represents unique geological object on the surface of which the joint of ancient Siberian platform and Central-Asian mountain chain structures take place.    Geological and tectonic processes in such areas require non-stop (operating) international quality level of study. The necessity of area study is caused by current activity of geological processes that can be observed by permanent seismicс tremors, crumbling and earth slide, relief movements and hydrothermal activities.
Study of geological and tectonic processes occurred in this region during previous geological periods will help to decode Pribaikal area earth’s crust formation staging and find its inner composition regularities. In its part, this information will be basis for possible seismic activity forecast in the studied region. Knowledge of these issues will provide possibilities to reduce the risk and minimization of natural disaster consequences, concerned with Pribaikal geology environment development.
Main aims and task of the research:
  • Pribaikal geosystem integrated study (geology, tectonics, geodynamics, geomorphology, and hydrogeology) in order to decode basic phases of region structure formation;
  • searching and study of geological structures that control modern seismic process in Pribaikal region (crack zones, deep imperfections, etc.);
  • basis development for possible forecast of seismic danger in Pribaikal region;
  • study of modern geological and seismic processes that can cause natural disasters;
  • Pribaikal geoecological monitoring basis development.
