Lectures

German colleagues Prof. Dr. Manfred Bölter and Dr. Christiane Eschenbach delivered a course of lectures and conducted seminars in English on «Soil Ecology and Microbiology» and «Project Management in Environment Preservation», which took place from 16 to 19 January within the framework of cooperation between REC «Baikal» and Christian Albrecht University (Kiel, Germany). The participants of these seminars were students and postgraduates of Geographic and Biology and Soils Studies Departments of Irkutsk State University, postgraduates of Scientific Research Institute of Biology at Irkutsk State University, Institute of Geography of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as researchers of Siberian Institute of Physiology and Biochemistry of Plants SB RAS.

  1. What does a project mean? Characteristics of good projects, peculiar features of projects related to environment preservation.
  2. Planning and structure of projects (typical phases, stages, etc.)
  3. Team management. Documentation and control.

Prof. M. Bolter (Soil Ecology and Microbiology)
  1. Soil as a microbial habitat. Soil organisms, soil microbes, algae and fungi. Rhizospheres.
  2. Populations and communities. Physiology of soil organisms. Metabolism of microbes.
  3. Soil carbon: accumulation and disintegration. Control of organic matter disintegration. CO2 and CH4 generated by soil gases. Nitrogen cycle and fixation of N2 in soil.
