International Summer School "Limnoecology of Lake Baikal"

School Programme

International summer school "Baikal Limnology" was organized for Russian and German students and post-graduate students since August 20 to September, 4 by Research and Educational Center "Baikal" (Irkutsk State University) and the Ecological Center of Christian Albrecht University (Kiel, Germany) within the frames of long-term cooperation between ISU and the German University. The Summer school program had been drawn up jointly by the professors of the two universities, biologists Eugene Silow and Manfred Belter. One of the basic subject of the school was "Introduction to limnology" that was read by professors of both Irkutsk and Kiel Universities. It is one of the basic courses for nature management students, hydrologists, ecologists and biologists.

The school was arranged in accordance with an innovation educational scheme, including a virtual component. It was decided to adjust virtual interaction before face to face phase for having maximum benefit spending two weeks at the lake and because school theme demands good fundamental knowledge of post-graduate students. The main innovation was virtual preliminary stage (the web-forum on our portal) which included studies, acquaintance, teamwork, certain tasks solution.

The direct contact between students, PhD students and professors while they knew each other through the web-forum took place in Bolshie Koty in ISU Biology research station. Participants of the school were divided into three working groups. Groups worked in the next directions: plankton survey, benthos survey, system analysis and management in coastal areas. Each group headed by Irkutsk and Kiel professors. Plankton and Benthos survey groups firstly worked at the research laboratories, did analysis of microbiological indices in water samples, searched biodiversity of the Lake Baikal in different depths in four day expedition in Baikal. Group “System analysis and management in coastal areas” did public-opinion poll. Participants of the group asked people that arriving, living and working in Bolshie Koty their opinion about present and future position of the village. Also the group did questionnaire for summer school participants about their impression while taking part in summer school.

All participants marked that Summer school "Baikal Limnology" was a successful project that combined studying, scientific activities, useful international contact, excellent language practice and of course unforgettable Baikal journey.
