Participant’s opinions

On interaction of Institute of System Dynamics and Management Theory SB RAS with REC “Baikal”
– Our Institute is a participant of the sixth REC unit which deals with GIS technologies and
portal lake.baikal.ru in close cooperation with a group of Andrew Mantsivoda, ISU Professor. This
work is very interesting: we obtain additional knowledge on Lake Baikal with novel methods, on its
littoral part, and provide information support to studies of our limnologists and other scientists.
Today’s results speak about usefulness of this interaction. Some geoinformation systems have been
elaborated related to forest use and studies of geological structure of the coast of Lake Baikal.
Four manuscripts have been written for publication, a monograph is being prepared, and courses for
students have been organized at a new technological level. Wishes
– The main wish is to be more active in involving senior and graduate students in research work.
It is necessary to have certain grants. The current state is as follows: there are scientific
supervisors who are able to set a problem; there are also young scientists concerned; it is
necessary to have additional financing. Creative young people instead of working as managers
somewhere in shops or searching for other sources of income which are not connected with their
specialties, should have all the conditions necessary for professional scientific activity during
their studies at University. The problem consists of two parts: personnel (first of all, search of
interested youth) and money. At the Symposium we mentioned that call would be announced for getting
grants. REC “Baikal” has to take an active part in these calls. From the viewpoint of
organizational capabilities of REC, I think the mechanism has been perfected, and everything will
come out of it.
On plans of further cooperation with REC “Baikal”
– Our Institute is an interdisciplinary institution which supports any managerial problems with
information technologies. The Center “Baikal” has entered the general organizational structure of
management with its scientific studies. This is very important. There are sometimes such projects
that with time nobody will remember them. I hope nothing of the kind will happen to REC. Since the
very beginning the Center has been supported from two sides – science and education. As for further
cooperation, one of the trends of the third-year plan of the Institute’s activity is devoted to
development of new information and new mathematical technologies aimed, first of all, at the
support of scientific studies of Lake Baikal. Our contribution to the activity of REC “Baikal” will
be mathematical and information support of scientific studies.
