The Second Summer Workshop
"Research and Education Center "Baikal" – development strategy"
Participant’s opinions
Bertram Heinze, Head of Branch of Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers
Germany in the Russian Federation
On state-of-the-art of science in Siberia
– I notice that in Siberia – in Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, and Tomsk science is being actively
developed. Today each scientific institution possesses advanced equipment which was purchased
through programs or special calls of the Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Education. Of course,
much more finances should be invested in equipment, new premises, and new institutes. However,
changes which have occurred open new prospects. I think that Siberian science have a powerful
potential for further development.
On cooperation
– Our organization deals with studies of global problems in all the spheres of natural sciences,
including seismic and tectonic research. As it was said by Professor Sklyarov, the territory of
Pribaikalye is a unique geological object. The activity of geological processes has not been
stopped in the region. Seismic shifts constantly remind about it. Scientists of Institute of Earth
Crust are monitoring and analyzing these processes. I believe that this sphere of scientific
studies will be of great interest for colleagues from the Geological Center of Helmholtz
Association. Environmental Scientific Research Center of Germany is also interested in joint
projects with Baikal ecologists. Cooperation is possible and real. New call announced by Helmholtz
Association will be open on February 1, 2008.
On Lake Baikal
– I have already been to Lake Baikal in winter. Now I have a chance to see the summer lake. The
first impressions were about the frozen lake when cars could cross the lake. Now the picture is
quite different. I am very glad that I have seen Lake Baikal in different seasons.
