The Second Summer Workshop
"Research and Education Center "Baikal" – development strategy"
Participant’s opinions
Michael Kuzmin, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of Presidium
of Irkutsk Scientific Center (ISC), Director of Institute of Geochemistry, Siberian Branch of the
Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS)
On interaction of ISC with REC “Baikal”
– Undoubtedly, closer relationships between academic institutions and universities are
necessary. Such kind of cooperation is more developed at Moscow State University and Novosibirsk
State University. We are also trying to establish such relations in Irkutsk. There is a series of
joint programs and courses which are being introduced into universities’ curriculum. Moreover, we
are trying to involve students in research.
On the whole, it is a very difficult task to establish any kind of cooperation. In case with REC
“Baikal”, it is to unite a great number of scientists from different structures, academic
institutions and universities and to make them work together effectively. This complicated task can
be solved when enthusiasts deal with a problem. The development of Research Educational Center is
successful due to the work of such enthusiasts. I mean Alexander Arguchitsev, ISU Pro-Rector,
Executive Director of REC “Baikal”, and Andrew Mantsivoda, Professor of ISU. They were able to
interest and bring together not only teachers and students of their University, but also us –
representatives of the Academy of Sciences, which is, to tell the truth, very complicated because
of our commitments and duties. Today we are talking about prospects of REC development. The work is
in full swing – this is the most important thing.
On role of Institute of Geochemistry in the REC “Baikal” activity
– For the time of the REC being we formed a join Chair of Geochemistry at Irkutsk University. I
give lectures to students on classical geochemistry within the framework of the curriculum which
touch upon all the aspects of this science, including studies on paleoclimate for prognosis of
environmental changes. This is the topic of my presentation at the Symposium and the activity of
the first unit of REC “Baikal”. I would like the students to deeply penetrate into the problem. It
is also very important that all the students of the Chair take part in expeditions organized by the
Institute. Moreover, they work together with our young scientists at scientific conferences.
Plans and wishes
– One of the most important tasks which should be solved in the nearest future is to hold
constant seminars and schools on the REC basis where students and experienced scientists would
gather together, give presentations, discuss and exchange opinions, as it is happening now on the
shore of Lake Baikal. It is necessary to develop and support interests of young researchers in
science.
